Wakrah lift game late to beat Al Gharafa


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Al Wakrah lifted their game a notch when it mattered most to put it past Al Gharafa in the Qatar Basketball League yesterday.
The match was a closely contested affair until the third quarter but Al Wakrah produced a brilliant 30-point effort in the final 10 minutes to clinch an eventually comfortable 95-86 win.
Al Wakrah led 28-26 after the first quarter and maintained their slight advantage when they held a 48-45 lead at the halfway stage.
But Al Gharafa scored 23 points in the third quarter to edge Wakrah 68-65 heading into the final 10 minutes.
However, they could not get their momentum going as Al Wakrah ran rampage, scoring at will. They also excelled in the defence, restricting Al Gharafa to just 18 points.
For Al Wakrah, Marcus Johnson shot seven three-pointers to top score with 29 points, while Adamu Saaka had 25.
Earnest Lee was the only other player to get into double figures with 20.
For Al Gharafa, Sammy Monroe scored 29 points, while James Justice had 25.
In another match, Rayyan edged Al Shamal 99-93 with Sherwood Brown scoring 23 while Mohamed Abdelkawy and Stephen Hurt netted 22 each.
Rayyan led for 22 minutes of the match despite being down 52-45 at the end of the second quarter, eventually winning the match with a 29-point effort in the final quarter.
Darryl Bryan scored 25 points for Al Shamal, while Moses Ahambi and Alioune Tew had 22 and 20 respectively.
