General strike to hit Israel over Teva Industries layoffs plan

(MENAFN) A nationwide general strike has been demanded by Histadrut, the trade union federation of Israel, aiming to protest an attempt to conduct major layoffs at the globally prominent generic drug producer and leading company in Israel, Pharmaceutical Industries.

Airports, ports, banks and government offices all over the country which are to stay shut until noon are to be affected by the strike.

Teva declared Thursday its plan which is to take place over the following two years to layoff 14,000 workers globally. The plan follows the company's announcement of restructure to survive a roughly $35 billion debt after obtaining Allergan's generics business in 2015 for $40.5 billion.
