(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Russian de facto authorities in Crimea grossly violate the Geneva Conventions of 1949 regarding the status of the occupied territories, while the Crimean Tatars in Crimea are currently subjected to more pressure than under the Soviet regime.
Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Dzhemilev said this during the meeting with the delegation of the Congress of local and regional authorities of the Council of Europe headed by President of the Congress Gudrun Mosler-Törnström, the press service of the Head of State reports.
"The occupation of Crimea has become a tragedy for hundreds of thousands of people, including those who earlier supported the invaders. Currently, Russian de facto authorities in Crimea persecute all people who oppose the occupation. The indigenous population of Crimea the Crimean Tatars who survived genocide and deportation in 1944 are currently subjected to more pressure than under the Soviet regime," Dzhemilev stressed.
Head of the delegation of the Congress of local and regional authorities Gudrun Mosler-Törnström, in turn, said that she was "deeply stricken and upset with the human rights situation in Crimea." According to her, the Congress has the information about the reprisals against Crimean Tatars and numerous human rights violations in Crimea and is closely monitoring the situation in the Crimean peninsula, occupied by Russia.
