Jordan- King receives WCC delegation


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Nov. 22 (Petra) - His Majesty King Abdullah II on Wednesday received a delegation of the World Council of Churches (WCC), currently visiting the Kingdom to participate in the meeting of the executive committee of the WCC being held in Amman.

During the meeting, King Abdullah assured the delegation that Jordan, stemming from the Hashemite custodianship of Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites, will continue its efforts to preserve the city's holy shrines and defend the property of its churches in all international forums.

His Majesty emphasized that the Kingdom is against any attempts to confiscate Christian property in East Jerusalem, stressing that Christian holy sites have the same attention and care that Jordan gives to Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.

King Abdullah stressed that Arab Christians are an integral part of the region and a key element of its identity, affirming that the protection of their rights is everyone's duty. His Majesty added that the decline in the number of Christians in Jerusalem is "disturbing and sad", saying :"Jerusalem must always be a symbol of hope and peace, not a symbol of division".

The King pointed put that the initiatives launched by Jordan and the religious conferences held in the Kingdom are designed to promote dialogue, understanding and the foundations of coexistence.

In this context, His Majesty referred to efforts the Kingdom's continues to exert to promote the values of tolerance and moderation and to build bridges of dialogue and understanding among the followers of different religions.

In turn, members of the WCC delegation commended Jordan's pivotal role, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, to bring about peace and promote security and stability in the region and the world.

They said the Kingdom is a unique model of coexistence, haling its endeavors in encouraging religious dialogue and launching initiatives that foster fraternity, tolerance and moderation.

They also expressed their appreciation for the efforts of His Majesty the King's efforts to defend Jerusalem's holy sanctities through the Hashemite custodianship of Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites.
