Qatar economy is very robust and people should not listen to rumours being spread by the siege countries as they tried targeting it but failed, said H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, Chairman of Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah International Foundation for Energy & Sustainable Development .
'The Qatar's economy is very robust and products like gas, petrochemicals, and petroleum exports to more than 95 countries around the world are continued. The siege countries tried to target our economy and failed to make any affect, said Al Attiyah added while speaking at Qatar University.
As part of its Distinguished Speakers Series, Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) yesterday hosted a lecture by Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah.
Themed 'Ras Laffan, From Idea to Reality, the lecture was part of CENG's initiative to host Qatari speakers who made great achievements in the field of business and industry, while contributing to Qatar's development and individuals' lives.
Attendees included QU President, Dr Hassan Al Derham; CENG Dean, Dr Khalifa Al Khalifa; and Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) Chief Human Capital Officer, Eng Abdulla Ahmad Naji; as well as QU leadership, faculty, staff and students.
Al Attiyah asked people not to listen to rumours because the siege countries wanted to exhaust us and to make us have a doubt about our economy but Qatar's economy is stronger than this countries. 'Qatar's economy is based on products that are in demand from the whole world and we are expanding the export to include more countries. Recently, we have signed agreement with Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Thailand and soon with Sri Lanka and The Philippines.
He said that the siege countries were accusing Qatar of supporting terrorism and if that was true then why the UAE was still buying Qatar's gas. 'Why they are boycotting only goods and foods and not boycotting gas also? Al-Attiyah questioned.
'Instead, these countries to address their financial situation want gas from Qatar. Qatar today gained the world respect and succeeded in not mixing politics with economy. About the alternative and renewable energy as a source for energy in Qatar, he said that solar energy was the most viable alternative source of energy for Qatar. 'Qatar is among the largest exporter of hydrocarbons in the world and after developing Al Shaheen Oil Field can increase the export of gas.
Al-Attiyah noted that gas had been discovered in the early seventies and that Ras Laffan City was considered as the largest and unique gas field in the world because of the lack of interest in the gas project exploration at that time. He also noted that the gas project exploration was stopped because of the oil boom that occurred in the 1970s and early 1980s when liquefied natural gas (LNG) was only known on a small scale in Japan and South Korea.
He said: 'After the drop in oil prices since 1984, the gas project exploration was launched again at a critical time and was supported by the Father Emir His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Al Attiyah pointed to the negotiations with Japan to import Qatari gas. He said: 'The gas shipment started to reach different countries across the world, which added to Qatar's achievements in oil and gas, positioning the country as one of the world's largest exporter of gas.
Dr Khalifa Al-Khalifa said: 'Through its Distinguished Speakers Series, CENG is connecting students and community members with Qatar's top speakers who made huge changes and who contributed to Qatar's progress and development in various fields. This event addresses youth and students who will become tomorrow's leaders and make best use of resources towards excellence and success in their future careers.
