The training provides the step-by-step strategies and methods to successfully help people get into rehab or detox, allowing them the opportunity to turn their lives around. Dr. Estes recently went on record to say that our current system of addiction and substance-abuse treatment does not always work and that professional coaches and interventionists are needed more than ever. Explaining the need for an increase in professional Recovery Coaches and Interventionists, Estes noted, 'The first step towards effective treatment and coaching can be the toughest. And getting the addict to agree to what they see as a giant leap, to accept help, can be a game-changer. About a month ago, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency. He's spent a lot of time talking about the severity of the drug crisis. But he's spent less time outlining the specific steps he'll take to fight it. 'This epidemic is a national health emergency, he said. 'Nobody has seen anything like what is going on now. He added, 'As Americans, we cannot allow this to continue. It is time to liberate our communities from this scourge of drug addiction. As Trump works on coming up with a plan, Dr. Estes is trying to do her part by giving those on the front lines of this crisis valuable skills to help prevent and reduce the chances of overdose or repeat overdose, which is often the case. Nearly 150 people are succumbing to overdose every day in the United States right now. And with some areas of the country seeing hundreds of calls daily for heroin overdose, a recent story in The Washington Post pointed out that the cost of an overdose has skyrocketed and is forcing tough decisions. The story notes, 'As their budgets strain, communities have begun questioning how much money and effort they should be spending to deal with overdoses, especially in cases involving people who have taken near-fatal overdoses multiple times. Two doses of an injectable form of naloxone, Evzio, cost $4,500, up from $690 in 2014. The price of other forms of the drug, including the nasally administered Narcan, typically range from $70 to $150 per dose, officials say. With the costs of reversing an overdose so high, Dr. Estes' plan of preventing them in the first place makes sense to many experts. 'We need to start to think differently about when to intervene in the addiction. Waiting until someone is already dead and then trying to revive them is not really a plan, it's a reaction, Estes declared. 'Let's get them the help they need before that even happens. Her goal: to get as many professionally trained recovery interventionists out there as possible. Structured, professional help from trained and certified interventionists can often be the difference between life and death. Intervention training tends to focus on clinical and detox assessment and family system dynamics because the crisis is not the sole problem of the addict. 'We have several different methods of crisis intervention to allow the addict to realize they need help, then we get the addict placed in the proper treatment facility to give them another chance at life, Estes said. 'Every situation is different and needs to be customized for the client and their family. When asked why she was offering the scholarships for the First Responders and parents, Dr. Estes asserted, 'These are the people who are right in the thick of it, the folks who see this, live in the middle of this drug epidemic. They have the power to instantly save someone's life and change the course of history by tapping into some basic, but powerful, interventionist skills. 'Interventions are not like we see on TV, they are very different and can happen at any moment. And if you have the right training, you can take advantage of that moment and those skills to make a world of difference, she added.
