Dubai, November 22, 2017: The 14th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, today unveiled its rich and diverse lineup of films and events. This year the Festival will introduce audiences to the most highly anticipated new films from around the world, alongside a diverse events programme at the Dubai Film Market (DFM) featuring some of the most creative talents working in the industry today.
The Festival, which runs 6 13 December, hosted at the Madinat Jumeirah, the home of DIFF, will screen a total of 140 films from 51 countries spanning feature, non-fiction and short films, including an astonishing 50 world and international premieres and 81 MENA premieres. The films, crafted in more than 38 languages, populate DIFF's Arab and Emirati competitions and its out-of-competition segments dedicated to children, the Arab world, Virtual Reality and cinema from around the globe.
With 16 Galas and 14 Special Presentations announced, the Festival offers a compelling combination of red carpet glamour and a journey of film discovery and cultural exchange for film lovers.
With Q & As and special appearances from a stellar lineup of industry talent, and the spotlight firmly on Oscar hopefuls as well as promising Arab talent, the stage is set for another unforgettable eight-day celebration of the very best in cinema.
Continuing to provide a platform for talent from the region, once again this year a high calibre of contemporary Arab films will compete in the Muhr Competition. The Muhr Awards are an opportunity to highlight the enormous wealth of talent working in Arab cinema today, both behind and in front of the camera. The DIFF 2017 selection comprises 59 biopics, comedies, dramas and love stories from the Arabian Peninsula, Levant and North Africa.
This year, DIFF's Opening Night Gala on Wednesday 6th December presents award-winning actor, writer and director, Scott Cooper's Western masterpiece, ‘Hostiles', starring Christian Bale, and Rosamund Pike. Set in 1892, ‘Hostiles' tells the story of a legendary Army Captain (Christian Bale), who after stern resistance, reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back to tribal lands. Making the harrowing and perilous journey from Fort Berringer, an isolated Army outpost in New Mexico, to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow (Rosamund Pike), whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape, hostile Comanche and vicious outliers that they encounter along the way.
Closing the curtain will be one of the most anticipated releases of the year, ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi'. The latest instalment of the epic fantasy makes its return to DIFF with the next chapter in the Skywalker saga and will premiere on 13th December, at the Madinat Jumeirah, the home of DIFF. Written and directed by acclaimed helmer, Rian Johnson, the film features an interstellar cast of rising stars and old favourites, including Carrie Fisher in her final role. In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past. With pre-release buzz at fever pitch, the word on the intergalactic grapevine is that this is set to be one of the strongest editions of the franchise yet as the battle between the light and the dark side rages on. The all-star cast includes Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro.

Winter is a special time of year in the UAE and there is always a hint of celebration in the air. For me, DIFF is a time when friends, family and film lovers come together to enjoy the magic of storytelling at its very finest. Whether you want to enjoy an outdoor beach screening, attend a red carpet gala or simply catch a new release in the cinema, there really is no excuse not to immerse yourself in the silver screen this December.
At its opening ceremony, DIFF will present three DIFF Honorary Awards, to celebrate those individuals' significant achievements and contributions to the film industry. The first award will be presented to the illustrious Egyptian writer Wahid Hamed, celebrating his achievements in screenwriting and outstanding contributions to the industry. One of Egypt's most acclaimed writers with a career that spans four decades, Hamed has an impressive list of credits to his name. DIFF's second Honorary Award goes to the legendary British actor Sir Patrick Stewart OBE, whose career has included roles on stage, television, and film in a career spanning almost six decades. He is a multiple Olivier, Golden Globe, Emmy, Screen Actors Guild and Saturn Award nominee. His many roles; include 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and 'X-Men' film series, including his latest critically acclaimed performance as Professor Xavier in James Mangold's ‘Logan.' The third award goes to the acclaimed Indian actor Irrfan Khan, a significant figure in Indian film and television since the early 1990s with an incredible body of work of more than eighty films in India as well as his works in British films and Hollywood. His roles includes include, ‘The Namesake', ‘Slumdog Millionaire', ‘The Lunchbox', ‘Life of Pi' and most recently ‘The Song of Scorpions' which screens at DIFF 17.

For the sixth consecutive year, IWC Schaffhausen, ‘Supporting' Sponsor and Official ‘Festival-Time' Partner of DIFF, have collaborated with DIFF to grant one talented filmmaker from the region the esteemed IWC Filmmaker Award and a cash prize of US$ 100,000. The nominees for 2017 are: Emirati director and screenwriter Nayla Al Khaja, for ‘Animal'; Bahraini filmmaker Mohamed Rashed Buali, for his project ‘Kombars'; Saudi director Haifaa Al Mansour, for her feature ‘Miss Camel'; and Omani filmmaker Muzna Almusafer, for ‘The Crown of Olives'.
An acclaimed jury headed up by Academy Award winning actress and IWC Schaffhausen brand ambassador Cate Blanchett will determine the potential of each film project and select the winner. Joining Cate Blanchett will be IWC CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr, DIFF Chairman Abdulhamid Juma, Tunisian actress and IWC brand ambassador Hend Sabri and DIFF Artistic Director Masoud Amralla Al Ali. The award will be presented to the winning filmmaker at an exclusive gala event on Thursday 7th December at the One & Only Royal Mirage in Dubai.
DIFF is also proud to continue its partnership with The United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Interior for the fourth year running. The Ministry of Interior's Cinema Award, which comprises a prize of $100,000, will be presented at the Festival.
Running concurrently with DIFF, the Dubai Film Market (DFM) is a vital part of the Festival and now considered the leading industry platform in the region and a gateway to the one of the fastest growing film and TV markets in the world. Since its inception, the DFM has supported more than 300 filmmakers and has brought films to the screen that have gone on to enjoy critical acclaim and find new audiences across the globe.
The DFM's co-production market The Dubai Film Connection celebrates its tenth edition with 13 projects in development competing for a wide array of awards including ART, Cinescape & Front Row Filmed Entertainment, The Hideaway Entertainment Award and Le Centre National de Cinema.
Throughout the week festival goers can choose from 28 industry-orientated talks, panel discussions, masterclasses and events featuring some of the biggest names in global cinema, sharing their insights, perspectives and experience with the Forum.
The programme includes ‘Women at the Helm', presented in partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The special panel will feature visionary, award-winning female directors including Kimberly Peirce, Haifaa Al Mansour, Niki Caro and Dee Rees. In addition, John Bailey, the newly elected President of AMPAS will share his experience on ‘The Art of Cinematography'.
Academy Award-nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock heads to DIFF to host an insightful conversation about a risk-taking career of entertaining exposs that turn the camera on the director himself, and the making of his latest film ‘Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken' which premieres at the Festival.
Winning Two Primetime Emmys in a row is no small feat. Director and executive producer Michelle Maclaren has helmed dozens of episodes across critically acclaimed series including HBO's 'Game of Thrones, 'The Leftovers, 'Westworld, 'The Deuce exclusively available on OSN in the region and AMC's 'Breaking Bad and ‘'Better Call Saul'. Known for her distinctive style and cinematic flair, join Maclaren for an intimate journey into her creative process from script to screen in the Forum, and find out what it's like to produce and direct for the best of Primetime TV.
There is also an insight into how we create, distribute and consume content with Snapchat sensation Shaun McBride, named in Forbes 30 under 30 list, and Tanner Fox, with millions of followers across social media platforms, to learn about the art of Snapchat storytelling and creating original content for some of the leading brands and media companies around.
This year, to end the UK/UAE 2017 Year of Culture there will be a UK Spotlight at the Festival. This will include a costume design masterclass presented by BAFTA and Swarovski with BAFTA and Academy Award-winning designer Alexandra Byrne who has designed some of the most iconic screen costumes. Her filmography includes, ‘Elizabeth' (1998), ‘The Phantom of the Opera' (2004), ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron' (2015) and most recently ‘Murder on the Orient Express' (2017).
BAFTA will also present a special costume design exhibition in partnership with Swarovski at DIFF, from December 6-13 at the DIFF Headquarters.
In addition, a diverse lineup of the latest cinema from the UK will be screened, and the BFI and British Council are holding the Writers Workshop and script development session in the DFM.
The DFM will also host a special Works-in-Progress screening on December 7th, when four selected Arab projects in post-production will be showcased to sales agents, distributors and festival programmers to enable the participants to make new connections and help them realise the potential of their films.
The DFM boasts a range of initiatives to back Arab talent, offering total script-to-screen support for emerging filmmakers. It has supported more than 300 projects to date, many of which have gone on to enjoy critical acclaim and find new audiences at the world's most prestigious events including the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs. More than 4,000 media and industry delegates from 65 countries are expected to attend the industry events programme to do business, attend work-in-progress screenings, masterclasses, seminars, meet new projects, network and acquire content.
The 14th edition also sees Screen International's acclaimed talent-spotting initiative, ‘Arab Stars of Tomorrow' return to DIFF. Promising Arab talent making waves on the festival circuit and international stage will be announced during the Festival.

This year, we are presenting a UK Spotlight with the British Film Institute, BAFTA and British Council, to connect film professionals from the UK and the Arab world. We are also partnering once again with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and look forward to welcoming delegations from both parties to the Festival this year. Not only will their presence allow us to showcase the best of regional cinema to a global audience, they will also be sharing their expertise and experience with the local industry through the DFM. This year we are also launching The Writers' Room at the Festival, a platform which aims to expand individuals' cross-cultural networks. The 14th edition of DIFF is shaping up to be one of our most collaborative yet.
DIFFerent Reality takes centre stage at the DFM again this year, festival goers are invited to experience the latest virtual reality films in a whole new dimension at the du VR Cinema, giving film fans the opportunity to experience an immersive journey into this boundary-pushing new world of technology.
Located within the Festival headquarters, the du VR Cinema will bring to life ten of the world's most advanced VR films celebrating some of the most exciting VR and augmented reality work to date. Works from some of the leading creators and emerging voices in this new medium will unfold around you in 360 degrees at the du VR Cinema.
There is also an exciting line-up of VR and Artificial Reality Experiences bringing the latest experience from around the world including Japan, Spain, UK, UAE, USA, France and Russia.
On screens and behind the scenes, DIFF has focused on the younger generation with a lineup of films from the region and beyond to enjoy and inspire. In addition, there is a packed programme in the Forum and a range of VR experiences for film fans, filmmakers, and accredited students to get involved in.
The DIFF Young Journalist Award (YJA) returns for its 10th edition, an unmissable opportunity for eight promising young writers from across the UAE to gain first-hand industry experience working with Gulf News and reporting from the Festival. Meanwhile, DIFF's Volunteer program goes from strength-to-strength with over 7,000 registrations this year.
Each evening of the Festival sees several Red Carpet Galas shining the spotlight on new work from acclaimed directors and adding a touch of sparkle to proceedings. Red Carpet Galas are an opportunity to watch screenings at DIFF's purpose built state-of-the-art screening venue, the Madinat Arena. In addition, there will be a series of red carpet presentations at the Madinat Theatre in the Souk Madinat Jumeirah along with screenings of the best films from around the world at VOX Cinemas, Mall of the Emirates and DIFF adds a new weekend venue this year for films fans at VOX Cinemas, Galleria Mall.
These start rolling on Thursday, 7th December with British director Dominic Cooke's ‘On Chesil Beach' based on the novel by Ian McEwan about relationships in the early 1960s, and will be followed by ‘Orchestra Class', a heart-warming tale of new beginnings and the power of music from French actor and director, Rachid Hami.
Friday 8th will present a triple bill of screenings at the Arena beginning with the Children's Gala ‘Ferdinand', from critically appraised Brazilian director, Carlos Saldanha, an adventure-comedy about a Spanish fighting bull, voiced by John Cena. This will be followed by the critically praised ‘The Death of Stalin', from Scottish-Italian filmmaker Armando Iannucci, a Soviet era satire about one of the world's most ruthless dictators. A stellar cast of Michael Palin, Steve Buscemi, Jason Isaacs and Jeffrey Tambor bring the historic figures to life as the ensemble explores the last days of Stalin's regime and the chaos that follows his death. Closing the triple bill of Galas is Warwick Thornton's award-winning Australian period-western ‘Sweet Country' inspired by real events.
Saturday, 9th plays host to three Gala screenings. DIFF's afternoon Gala is Academy Award-nominated actor, writer, producer and director Rob Reiner's ‘Shock and Awe' which takes a real-life look at a group of journalists who uncovered the unsubstantiated claims by the President George W. Bush's administration that led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. With a star-studded cast that boasts Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and directed by Jake Kasdan, ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle', brings an early evening of action-packed, fun-fuelled adventure to the Arena. Concluding the day is Hollywood actor, writer, producer and director James Franco's much celebrated ‘The Disaster Artist', a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Tommy Wiseau's ‘The Room' from 2003, an undoubtedly awful film that has become one of the most beloved cult classics of all time.
Dubbed one of the most creative and visionary artists of his generation, Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro presents the stunning romantic fantasy ‘The Shape of Water' on Sunday, 10th. The highly anticipated feature and winner of the Golden Lion Award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival features the star-studded talents of Academy Award nominees Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins, and Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer.
After turning heads with ‘Clash' (2016), acclaimed TV and film writer, Khaled Diab, returns with his latest feature ‘Induced Labour' for the first Gala on Monday, 11th. The evening Gala presents the darkly comic drama ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri', from Academy Award winning British filmmaker, Martin McDonagh. Highly tipped for Oscar success, the film stars Oscar winner Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell and has won an accolade of awards including Best Screenplay Award at the Venice Film Festival, the People's Choice Award at TIFF, with a further 11 nominations for British Independent Film awards.
Tuesday 12th will enjoy two screenings beginning with BAFTA Award winning director Lynne Ramsay's ‘You Were Never Really Here.' After a phenomenal reception at The Cannes Film Festival, the gripping thriller picked up awards for Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Screenplay. Matt Damon headlines a cast that includes Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, Laura Dern, Jason Sudeikis, Alec Baldwin, and Neil Patrick Harris in Academy Award winning Alexander Payne's sci-fi social satire ‘Downsizing' about a man who chooses to shrink himself (literally) to simplify his life. This fun and touching film concludes the screenings in the Arena.
DIFF's much loved open-air screenings in partnership with Meraas return to THE BEACH, opposite JBR, with a choice of top international and regional films screened on a vast outdoor screen - for free. On the Festival's opening night, December 6th, film fans will be able to watch all the action from the red carpet live as it unfolds. THE BEACH will then go on to host the premiere of renowned Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi's latest acclaimed feature, ‘Beyond the Clouds' that dwells on the adoration of love, life and human relationships starring theatre actress Malavika Mohanan and Ishaan Khatter.
On December 7th, THE BEACH will take audiences on a journey to the highest peaks in the world in Jennifer Peedom's epic new cinema documentary, ‘Mountain' narrated by Willem Dafoe. The world premiere ‘Grain of Sand' from renowned British guitarist and composer, Jason Carter will screen on the 8th featuring live performances.
‘The Man Behind the Microphone', from British-Tunisian filmmaker Claire Belhassine, is a complex story about Hedi Jouini, dubbed the Frank Sinatra of Tunisian music and will also feature a live performance on the 9th. The 60-year-old directorial masterpiece ‘Where to?', from Georges Nasser, a film that ushered Lebanon into the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in 1957 screens on the 10th.
A documentary biopic about the life of one of the world's most influential designers, Manolo Blahnik, from filmmaker Michael Roberts, ‘Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards' screens at THE BEACH on the 11th. Restored by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the landmark black-and-white monster epic ‘King Kong' from director's Ernest B. Schoedsack and Merian C. Cooper lights up THE BEACH screen on the 12th.
The upcoming American comedy-drama ‘The Bachelors' directed and written by Kurt Voelker and starring Oscar winner J.K Simmons closes DIFF's Beach Screenings on the 13th.
The prestigious entertainment venue The Madinat Theatre in the Souk Madinat Jumeirah will also play host to a diverse lineup of screenings and special presentations. The world premiere of ‘Kiss Me Not', an original mockumentary from Egyptian-American writer, producer and director Ahmed Amer screens on Thursday, 7th December. Followed later that evening by David Batty's ‘My Generation', narrated by Michael Caine, the documentary is pieced together during the height of 1960s British pop culture.
A magical film outing for the family on Friday, 8th takes audiences on a wondrous journey with ‘Ana and Bruno' brought to life by award-winning Mexican director Carlos Carrera. Next up is Danish filmmaker Janus Metz Pedersen and the highly anticipated tennis drama ‘Borg McEnroe' starring Shia LaBeouf, Sverrir Gudnason and Stellan Skarsgard. Next up to the plate is Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlock's latest documentary, ‘Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!'. The film will be followed by an extended Q & A session with Morgan Spurlock, his co-writer and producer Jeremy Chilnick and producer Matthew Galkin. The day closes with ‘The Journey', a feature film in the Muhr competition from award-winning Iraqi filmmaker Mohamed Jabrah Al-Daradji, about the chance encounter between two strangers in Baghdad's central station.
Saturday, 9th presents a film from the Cinema for Children programme, the screening of French director Nicolas Bary's ‘Little Spirou', an intrepid tale of an adventurous young boy, Spirou. The early evening brings the touching biopic of A.A. Milne and the beloved Winnie-the-Pooh characters in ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin' from acclaimed filmmaker Simon Curtis starring Margot Robbie and Domhnall Gleeson. The triple bill of Souk presentations concludes with ‘Birth', a compelling film from renowned Emirati filmmaker Abdullah Hasan Ahmed about a simple Emirati family living in a mountain village.
The stage is set on Sunday 10th December for a double bill of Arab films competing in the Muhr competition. French-Tunisian filmmaker Nacer Khemir heads to the Madinat Souk Theatre with the world premiere of her captivating feature ‘Whispering Sands'. Later in the day, internationally acclaimed director Annemarie Jacir returns to the Festival with her latest feature, winner of the Don Quixote Award at Locarno Film Festival and this year's Palestinian Oscar entry, the heart-warming story ‘Wajib'.
Filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos' highly acclaimed jarring tale ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer' featuring Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell showcases on Monday, 11th.
On December 8th, The Global Gift Gala will return to Dubai with the support of DIFF and UAE-based global philanthropic organization, Dubai Cares, to host an exclusive gala dinner and high-end auction featuring one-of-a-kind prizes to raise funds for Dubai Cares and the Global Gift Foundation, the official charity Gala of the Festival. Funds raised will go towards supporting projects across five continents making it a truly Global event that puts Dubai on the international stage for philanthropy in this Year of Giving*. A night of film stars and philanthropy is expected at Palazzo Versace Dubai. The annual glittering black-tie charity evening, sponsored by Cindy Chao & The Palazzo Versace, will host international stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Vanessa Williams, and Luis Fonsi who will perform his hit song ‘Despacito', led by Honorary Chairs of the Gala Huda Kattan and Alesha Dixon.
Emirates Airline Festival of Literature partners with DIFF on the journey from page to screen, as DIFF's Great Adaptations returns with ‘On Chesil Beach', acclaimed novelist Ian McEwan's brittle comedy of manners, following a young couple on their wedding night in buttoned-up Britain in 1962. The in-conversation with the film's director Dominic Cooke will follow the Madinat Arena screening in the Forum Room at the DIFF HQ on Thursday, 7th December.

The 14th edition of DIFF will see films screened over eight days at the Madinat Jumeirah Arena, Madinat Theatre, Souk Madinat Jumeirah, VOX Cinemas - Mall of the Emirates, THE BEACH opposite JBR and at for the first time this year at VOX Cinemas - Galleria Mall in Dubai. Cinemagoers will be able to buy tickets from the DIFF box office, which will open online on Friday, November 24th www.diff.ae and at the box office at VOX Cinemas Mall of the Emirates. Tickets will also be available from the Madinat Arena, Madinat Jumeirah from Tuesday, December 5th and from the Madinat Theatre, Souk Madinat Jumeirah on Wednesday, 6th December.
