Indonesian forces called to stop virginity tests

(MENAFN)An international human rights group said Wednesday that despite the world Health Organization declaring that Indonesian abusive virginity tests are invalidate, military and police continue to perform them on female recruits.

Senior Indonesian police and military officers said that security forces still enforce the "cruel and discriminatory tests," which are imposed under the excuse of psychological examinations for mental health and morality reasons, Human Rights Watch said.

"The Indonesian government's continuing tolerance for abusive 'virginity tests' by the security forces reflects an appalling lack of political will to protect the rights of Indonesian women." stated Nisha Varia, women's rights advocacy director at Human Rights Watch.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo was called to order the national police chief and military commander to stop the practice.
