Zimbabwe crisis deepens as Mugabe refuses to abide to the deadline

(MENAFN)Zimbabweans have been stunned by President Robert Mugabe defiance after he ignored a midday deadline set by the ruling party to step down or face impeachment proceedings, vowing more protests to force him to leave.

The ruling party's Central Committee had meeting to discuss impeachment of the 93-year-old Mugabe, the world's oldest head of state, after 37 years in power.

The Zimbabwean government ordered Cabinet ministers to pursue business as usual, despite the political confusion.

Influential liberation war veterans association and Opposition activists have announced more protests to force Mugabe to leave.

"Your time is up." said veterans association leader Chris Mutsvangwa at a press conference.
