Qatar Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) reviewed the challenges and alternative ways of providing water due to climate change at the 23rd UN Climate Change Conference (COP23).
Kahramaa said in a statement that it has highlighted the experience of the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) in reducing the consumption of electricity and water as well as conserving resources in the face of climate change during the conference held from November 14 to 16, 2017 in Bonn, Germany.
Kahramaa President Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari participated at the conference as a keynote speaker at the 'water in the circular economy session, which reviewed the most important challenges and alternative ways to save water due to climate change. He said that Kahramaa succeeded in the past period in reducing the loss of water by 50 percent. Kahramaa President added that after the launch of the national program 'Tarsheed in 2012, the per capita consumption of water in Qatar was reduced by 20 percent by the end of 2016. He pointed out that treated water is now being used in central cooling stations, reducing about 60 percent of the drinking water used for refrigeration.
Al Kuwari added that the move to the circular economy in the water is of maximum benefit to the state, which saves the state funds and reduces the impact of harmful carbon emissions that lead to climate change and establish models for rationalization and sustainability.
Director of Kahramaa's Energy Efficiency and Rationalization Department Abdulaziz Ahmed Al Hammadi presented a working paper at the climate summit on investment in infrastructure in the State of Qatar as part of a session ‘ways to invest in infrastructure that is resistant to climate change'. The national program 'Tarsheed over the last five years has reduced 8.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions and contributed to reducing electricity and power emissions from about 46 percent in 2013 to 39.6 percent in 2016. Kahramaa aims, through the national program 'Tarsheed, to reduce about 6 million tons of harmful carbon emissions by 2022. Among initiatives adopted by Kahramaa to reduce environmental pollution in climate change is the 'green cars initiative, green building procedures and regulations as well as 'renewable energy projects to achieve sustainable development.
The participation of the State of Qatar included the establishment of a pavilion in the exhibition accompanying the climate summit, which witnessed a large number of visitors to know the experience of 'Kahramaa in the program 'Tarsheed to reduce electricity and water consumption and resource conservation in addition to addressing climate change by reducing carbon emissions.
