Saudi Arabia recalls envoy to Germany for consultation

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Nov 18 (Petra) –– Saudi Arabia Saturday summoned its ambassador to Germany home over remarks by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel that Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Al Hariri was being held against his will in the Kingdom.

Commenting on the "incorrect" statements Gabriel made in a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart, Gebran Bassil, the Saudi News Agency, quoting the foreign ministry in Riyadh, said: "Such remarks provoke the surprise and disapproval of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which considers them as aimless and based on false information that will not help bring about stability in the region".

"Such random statements do not represent the position of friendly Germany, which the Kingdom considers a trusted partner in the war on terrorism and extremism and in the quest to achieve security and stability in the region", added the agency.

According to the agency, Riyadh decided to summon its ambassador to Germany for consultation and to deliver a protest to the German ambassador to the Kingdom over the remarks.

In a tweet in English dismissing Gabriel's remarks today, Hariri said: "To say that I am held up in Saudi Arabia and not allowed to leave the country is a lie. I am on the way to the airport, Mr. Gabriel", noting that he was leaving Riyadh, where he announced his surprise resignation earlier this month, for Paris, as he announced several days ago.
