DHADNAH, Fujairah, 17th November, 2017 (WAM) – A service of remembrance was held yesterday at the memorial to a British Royal Air Force navigator who died in Dhadnah during the Second World War.

The navigator, Sergeant William 'Billy' Donnelly, suffered fatal injuries when his Wellington bomber, on its way from Sharjah to India, crash-landed on Sayh Dhadnah in February 1943. The other four people on the plane survived.

The service, attended by British Embassy personnel, was conducted by Reverend (Wing Commander) Nicoll, the chaplain for the RAF's 83 Expeditionary Air Group. During the service, wreaths were laid in memorial of Sergeant Donnelly and a bugler played the Last Post to mark the start of a two-minute silence.

A memorial to Sergeant Donnelly was inaugurated in Dhadnah in 2010, with the support of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council member and Ruler of Fujairah.
