Qatar- Call to focus on knowledge as WISE concludes

The eighth World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) concluded yesterday with a global call to education leaders to prepare future generations for a changing world by placing knowledge at the centre of society.
The closing ceremony attended by H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation (QF) included a discussion entitled: 'From Knowledge Economies to Knowledge Societies. It discussed about knowledge economies transforming in to knowledge society. Stavros N Yiannouka, the CEO of WISE and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nigerian novelist and short story teller in a panel discussion with Yalda Hakim, broadcaster and journalist spoke about how the transition of knowledge economies in to knowledge society will impact education.
Following the discussion, in his closing remarks, Yiannouka said, 'We had exhilarating and inspiring couple of days together, discussing how education is the key to building the society that values knowledge. It is a testament to the fact that Qatar is very much open to the world.
He also said that in the next 18 months WISE will hold three gathering at different destinations.
It will include a meeting in May 2018 in Accra, September 2018 in New York and in March 2019 in Paris. While the next WISE Summit will be held in Doha in 2019.
Also the 2017 WISE Prize laureate Patrick Awuah, founder of Ashesi University, in Ghana, shared about the journey establishing a university to foster leadership and integrity, during the closing session. Sheikha Moza presented the Prize Awuah at the Opening Plenary session of the summit on Wednesday, recognizing his outstanding contribution in promoting leadership, ethics and entrepreneurship among youth in Africa, through a unique curriculum being taught at the Ashesi University.
While, the theme of WISE 2017, ‘Co-Exist, Co-Create: Learning to Live and Work Together', sparked debate for two days, around the crucial role that education must play in times of global disruption and economic uncertainty.
More than 2,000 participants from over 100 countries attended the biennial Summit, which has become a premier international education gathering since its establishment in 2009.
The WISE Majlis featured experiential learning sessions for nearly 700 local students of 12 to 14-year age and their teachers. The Majlis also included an exhibition space for WISE research authors, opportunities to interact with Qatar-based education organizations, and many other activities. The two-day event featured diverse networking opportunities for delegates to interact and share experiences on their interests, projects, and education visions.
Some 12 research reports, including three of which related to Qatar, were released to coincide with the summit. While, Doha Learning Week is the flagship education festival of WISE also concluded yesterday. It was held in collaboration with various local partners, and presented present a series of workshops, movie screenings, exhibitions, lectures, performances, tours and hackathons around Doha to celebrate Qatar's education journey.
