France urges Israel to allow MPs' visits

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Nov 14 (KUNA) -- France said on Tuesday that Israel should allow French MPs entry into Israeli territory to pursue their missions to obtain information from people they want to meet there in line with their mission.

Israel has blocked the entry of a number of French Deputies and Senators and also European Parliamentarians, several of whom wanted to meet Palestinian activists and French nationals in detention in Israel.

The French delegations wanted, in particular to meet Palestinian activist leader Marwan Barghouthi, who has been in Israeli jails since 2002.

They also wanted to have contacts with the legal team defending French national Saleh Hammouri, who has been placed in "administrative detention" several times but has not received proper judicial process.

The French Foreign Ministry said it had "taken note" of the Israeli interdictions.

"In a general manner, we want French Parliamentarians to have access to all the interlocutors they want to meet to fulfil their information missions," the ministry's spokesperson Agnes Romatet-Espagne said at a briefing.

"We are attentive relative to Israel as with all countries where elected French (officials) are headed," she added. (end) jk.gb
