(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) An extensive collection of unique stamps and coins were on display at the Sharjah 2017 Stamp Exhibition, which began on Tuesday.
The exhibition, inaugurated by Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Media Council, at Mega Mall will run until November 18.
A total of 17 countries, with their rare exhibits, are participating in the event organised by the Emirates Philatelic Association in coordination with Mega Mall Sharjah.
The stamps, coins and other exhibits displayed across 120 platforms are divided into 46 different themes, according to the interests of the exhibitors and the type and quality of their exhibits.
There will be cultural activities on the sidelines of the exhibition including lectures titled 'Iraqi financial and postage stamps', and 'Save Palestine: 1948-1951,' as well as a public auction of stamps and rare coins.
Postage stamps are characterised by their ability to chronicle events during different periods of time. They also review the chronology of significant events in countries all over the world and document the most prominent characters, landmarks, achievements and events of the countries that produce them.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Sheikh Sultan said that the exhibition is an important cultural and artistic platform for those who wish to see the great historical value of the stamps, which chronicles the great figures and events of the different countries around the globe.
"This exhibition, which has become one of the region's most important exhibitions, unites collectors, hobbyists and vendors of rare stamps, coins, and paper currencies from the UAE and abroad," he added.
Mohammed Sorour, marketing manager of Mega Mall, said: "We are pleased to host the Sharjah Stamp Exhibition again, in order to promote tourism and commercial activity in Sharjah, and attract more visitors to Mega Mall."
Meanwhile, Emirates Post Group announced the release of a series of seven commemorative stamps to mark the UAE's Year of Tourism. The stamps, each priced at AED 3, are being released in sheets of twelve, with a total of 175,000 of each stamp..
Speaking to Khaleej Times Yousif Al Khaja, senior executive director, retail and postal operation, said that the Emirates Post usually launches stamps to mark all local and international events and occasions.
"The opening of the exhibition coincided with the tourism day ?in the UAE and we decided to have this great opportunity to launch the stamp during the opening ceremony."
Abu Baker Abdullah Abid, an official at stamps amateur section at the Emirates Post, said: "The stamp launched today to mark the tourism day is the fourth one in 2017." He added that a special stamp issued in 1973 to mark the establishment of the UAE was among hundreds of special stamps issued by the national postal agency.
