Oman- Domestic cricketer collapses during practice game, dies

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The cricketing fraternity in Oman was left in shockon Saturdayafter 39 year old Mohammed Ashfaque Shaikh, who played in domestic league, collapsed on the field and passed away soon after being admitted to hospital due to heart attack the same morning.

The incident occurred during a practice game between Global United Business, the team for which Shaikh played, against Sam Royals at the Oman Automobile Association ground.

Global United Business is competing in the Oman Cricket H Division league while Sam Royals plays in the I Division.

The tragic incident took place as Shaikh was completing his over. After picking a wicket in the over, Shaikh was about to bowl the next delivery when he just stopped and squatted. His teammates thought that he was taking rest and before they could realise, Shaikh fell with his face on to the ground. The teammates then brought a car to the ground and rushed him to the nearest hospital.

'We did give CPR but as he did not respond we took him to The Royal Hospital and reached in less than ten minutes,' said Samir Saiyed, a close relative and his teammate.

Saiyed said, 'Doctors tried for nearly 30-40 minutes to revive him but failed. They said he suffered a massive heart attack.'

His body will be taken to Mumbai, India for the last rites. Shaikh is survived by his wife and two kids. He was an employee of Uday Khimji Group and had played in C Division a few years ago.

He was making a comeback this season with Global United Business and had featured in the last few games.

Oman Cricket (OC) expressed its deep grief over Shaikh's death and offered condolences to his family.

'It's a very sad news. We can feel the pain of his family and offer our heartfelt condolences. May God rest his soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this loss with fortitude,' said Madhu Jesrani, OC secretary.

This is the second incident in Oman when a cricketer has died while playing in the past couple of months.

In September, a 30 year old cricketer, Praveen V M, died after collapsing during a nets session at the Al Amerat ground. The cause of his death was ruptured brain aneurysm.
