ABU DHABI, 11th November 2017 (WAM) -- The annual church service to commemorate Remembrance Day took place this morning at St. Andrew's Church in Abu Dhabi. It was attended by ambassadors, military attaches and serving members of the armed forces of participating countries, as well as retired military veterans and members of Abu Dhabi's Anglican community.
The service is held each year on or close to the anniversary of the ceasefire on 11th November 1918 that brought the First World War to an end, with the objective of remembering those who have laid down their lives in conflict and in the service of their country.
In a sermon given during the service, the Right Reverend Michael Lewis, Anglican Bishop of Cyprus and the Gulf, asked congregants to remember those, both military and civilian, who had died during the course of the last century, in conflicts ranging from the First and Second World Wars to the more recent ones in Syria, Iraq and Yemen. "The sharpness of remembrance" not only represented an "imaginative solidarity" with those who had died, he said, but also provided an "opportunity to pare things down, to cut away evasion and to remember who we are, and who's we are."
During the service, readings from the Bible were given by British Ambassador Philip Parham and US Ambassador Barbara Leaf while Canadian Ambassador Masud Husain recited a poem, 'The Beginning of Guidance', by the Muslim philosopher Abu Hamid Al Ghazali.
