Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) yesterday held a seminar on 'Food Security, Technology and Techniques, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME).
The event aimed to discuss the main techniques that should be followed to enhance food security through investing in technology.
The event's program included speeches delivered by CENG Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Associate Professor Dr Saud Ghani, QU College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Centre for Sustainable Development Acting Director Mr Hareb Aljabri, and MME Agricultural Research Consultant and Technical Office Head Dr Ali El Kharbotly.
In his remarks, the CENG Dean, Dr Khalifa Al-Khalifa said: 'Through cooperation efforts with partners, CENG is managing different programs of research and consultations that support sustainability to enhance Qatar's self-sufficiency, and today's seminar is part of those initiatives.
Mr Hareb Aljabri said: 'We have been very pleased to work with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment for several years on programs that came up with good and satisfactory results, especially as we, at the Centre for Sustainable Development, have conducted research in the field of food security. We are currently coordinating with research teams to develop cooperation in the field of food security to exchange solutions, viewpoints and experience that support this field, and our next goal is to target the industry and external entities.
Dr Ali El Kharbotly said: 'The research teams at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment are working on the necessary plans to strengthen the mechanisms of food security through the development of the horizontal and vertical agricultural systems to achieve self-sufficiency through investing in natural resources, as well as the use of modern technology and development of the production system, and reduction of agricultural waste. The number of registered plants in Qatar is 1290, among which 910 are active. The number of plants that market their products is 362 farms, 464 fishing vessels and 2900 fishermen.
