Syria not invited to Paris Climate Summit in December

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Nov 8 (KUNA) -- The Syrian government is not being invited to attend the next Paris Climate Summit being organised here on December 12, despite a recent commitment by Damascus to abide by the 2015 Paris Climate Accords, official sources said Wednesday.

Foreign Ministry Deputy spokesman Alexandre Giorgini confirmed that Syria had not been asked to attend the event that aims to boost the Paris Accords with a view to combating global warming.

"The December 12 summit in Paris seeks to bring together the key actors from the finance and climate worlds. Syria has not been invited," he said in a briefing.

About 170 world leaders, in addition to business and ecology experts are being invited to the summit.

France has no diplomatic or other representation in Damascus as its ambassador and his staff were withdrawn shortly after the conflict erupted to protest the actions of the Syrian regime.

There is also some doubt about the level of the US participation next December here as President Donald Trump announced this summer that the US was withdrawing from the agreement.

Now that Syria has theoretically signed up for the 2015 Paris Accords, the US is the only country that is not party to the agreement, although this was ratified by Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama. (end) jk.hb
