German jazz trio FAVO opened the fourth Katara European Jazz Festival last night with a stunning performance which enthralled music lovers in attendance.
They impressed the audience playing their own compositions as well as adaptations of A. Piazolla, The Beatles, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Bobby McFerrin among others.
The band, who has played in various venues and festivals and recorded several albums, also gave workshops at Qatar Music Academy and the German International School Doha. Jazz music enthusiasts were also treated to a performance by Hilda Kazasyan band from Bulgaria.
Organised by Katara in cooperation with 11 European embassies , the five-day festival will see nightly open to public shows by jazz performers from Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Romania and Switzerland.
'Once again we meet to celebrate the much-awaited launch of Katara European Jazz Festival, with the fruitful cooperation of 11 European embassies, all of which are profound and rich in their cultures and arts, not to forget to mention that we definitely share a common vision, which is promoting rapprochement and communication between cultures and peoples through an artistic platform, said Katara General Manager Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti at the opening ceremony last night.
Al Sulaiti stressed that the festival is not only focused on musical and artistic performances but also includes workshops conducted by the renowned artists in cooperation with Qatar Music Academy, making the festival an ideal platform to showcase a wide spectrum of European arts and culture.
'The festival is an opportunity for those interested to live a one-of-a-kind jazz experience while discovering the various patterns and genres found in the field, he added.
The free concerts, which are held behind Katara Art Centre Building 5, start at 7pm and features new artistes every night.
Tonight, audiences will be on a date with Italian band, Filomena Campus Quartet, led by Filomena Campus, who is an Internationally renowned and award-winning Sardinian Jazz vocalist, lyricist and theatre director. They will perform ‘a harmonic marriage of Jazz music with unusual invasions of theatrical images and poetry.'
Contemporary Swiss jazz band Marc Perrenoud Trio will perform next at 8.30pm. The composer and pianist Marc Perrenoud, bassist Marco Muller and drummer Cyril Ragamey will give the audience a taste of their own 'band sound which they have developed through the years.
Tonight's show will conclude with the performance by Lokomotiv band from Portugal at 9:30pm. Formed in 1997, the trio plays modern Portuguese jazz music, exploring the fusion between Portuguese traditional rhythms and improvised music, as well as elements of rock and African and oriental flavours.
