(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Ras Al Khaimah committee for geographic names has managed to count, track and document over 4,000 spots across the northern emirate.
Dr Abdullah Al Taboor, head of the committee, said these locations have been named as widely known by the local people "who are well aware of the history of these remote areas".
So far, the committee has completed about 80 per cent of the total area of the emirate, he added. "The committee paid field visits to all spots of the emirate, met local people there, and collected all possible details about these locations."
The mission is to discover and name new spots, cover all cities, towns, villages, mountains, roads, farms, valleys, plains, and coasts of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, he explained.
"We also cover all the old buildings as well as historical and heritage sites all over the emirate."
Dr Taboor said the committee that started this mission three years back recently visited the Al Fahleen area.
"We were hosted by Hassan Al Naqbi who is one of the dignitaries and the in-charge of the area."
A number of story tellers present there enlightened the committee about the history of the Al Fahleen area, he said.
"They provided us with information on the names of each and every spot in the area which is to be registered and documented in an official way."
Dr Taboor indicated that most of the countries worldwide have recognised the importance of naming geographic places.
"Specialised committees have been assigned to take up this critical mission owning to its historic, civil and national impact."
The mission will help document all the names of the spots in the emirate and across the country, he pointed out.
"All ministries, departments, and entities concerned will be notified of these names - particularly when introducing new names, changing them, or writing them in Arabic or Roman letters."
