Mediterranean Sea: 26 dead bodies discovered

(MENAFN) In the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday, the bodies of twenty-six girls aged 14-18 were retrieved leading the Italian authorities to initiate an investigation in order to discover their cause of death. The girls are assumed to have been migrants from Nigeria and Niger, making a trip over the weekend to Europe from Libya.

CNN was informed by Salerno's head of police, Lorena Ciccotti that on Tuesday autopsies would be performed with coroners investigating signs of abuse or torture on the victims' bodies.

Ciccotti confirmed that their bodies were discovered near a fragile rubber small boat that almost completely sunk at time of the rescuers arrival. Aid workers had demonstrated the scene as survivors holding on onto the remnants of the boat as the girls' dead bodies floated close by.
