    EXPERT ALERTS:

The High Cost of Healthcare: Massachusetts as a Bellwether
    Ron Peck
    Senior VP & General Counsel
    The Phia Group, LLC
"Massachusetts was one of the first states to pass sweeping legislation impacting health insurance, and its law acted as a precursor to what would later be known nationally as the Affordable Care Act, or 'Obamacare.' Years later, Gov. Deval Patrick signed into law new parameters meant to examine what drives the cost of healthcare, and to contain the seemingly out of control costs. Now, in 2017, the Massachusetts State Senate has released a report regarding this very issue, recognizing that simply securing insurance for every citizen is not enough -- that the rising cost of healthcare is being driven by how much providers of healthcare are billing payers. Will Massachusetts take steps to actually cap how much consumers of healthcare can be charged -- not for insurance, but for actual healthcare? Will Massachusetts once again serve as a bellwether for the rest of the nation?"
Based in Massachusetts, Peck has been a member of The Phia Group's team since 2006. As an ERISA attorney with The Phia Group, he has been an innovative force in the drafting of improved benefit plan provisions, and spearheaded efforts to combat the steadily increasing costs of healthcare. Peck has been quoted in numerous publications, including Money, Inc. and Self Insurer, and was a contributing author to the book "The CEO's Guide to Restoring the American Dream" (Health Rosetta Publications; September 2017).

How to Enjoy the Holidays Without Blowing Your Fitness Goals
    Jonathan Jordan
    Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach
    Equinox
Jordan shares these three tips to enjoy the holidays without blowing your fitness goals: "1) Time your workouts around your parties. Our bodies are more efficient at burning off carbohydrates rather than storing them as body fat in the window after an intense workout. So if you know you are going to be eating naughty party treats or enjoying adult beverages at 8 p.m., try scheduling your workout to 6 p.m. to take advantage of that. 2) Build up 'calorie credits.' If you know you want to let loose at a party or a big meal on Friday, build up calorie credits in the week leading up to it. I recommend my clients know what their daily caloric needs are (it's easy to calculate) and to track their food in the free app MyFitnessPal. If they shave 200-300 kcal/day Monday through Thursday, they then have an extra 800-1,000 to enjoy on Friday without gaining weight for the week. 3) Fill the tank before you go. Don't go to a party hungry. Make sure you eat a balanced meal a few hours before (with adequate protein and healthy fats; these help you feel full) and that you are super hydrated. Often we confuse dehydration with hunger, and you'll likely be eating salty food and drinking booze, so hydrating will reduce your hangovers. These three simple and totally manageable tips have helped hundreds of my training and nutrition clients avoid the bloat and weight gain so many of us hit over the holiday season."
Jordan is an award-winning personal trainer, nutrition coach, group fitness Instructor and fitness blogger. He offers his clients personalized fitness programs and nutritional advice to coach them towards healthier, sustainable lifestyles. Formerly a partner at a large consulting firm, he understands the physical and mental challenges that busy professionals experience on a daily basis, and takes each client's unique lifestyle demands into consideration when creating his fitness programs. He also offers corporate wellness consulting to leading businesses around the Bay Area. His blog, JJ Fit 24/7, and his Instagram offer practical, effective and free videos, advice and tips each week.

The Role of Family in Shaping Individuals and Communities
    Emily M. Douglas
Head, Department of Social Science and Policy Standards; Professor, Social Science and Policy Standards
    Worcester Polytechnic Institute
"The role of the family in shaping individuals, groups, and communities cannot be under-stated. It is where we all begin and where our social norms and values are shaped and reinforced. Families that are better supported -- through communities, programs, or social policies -- are more likely to have children who are better well-adjusted and less likely to experience maltreatment and other types of hardships."
Douglas is available to discuss child maltreatment, fatal child maltreatment, the child welfare system, child welfare professionals, partner violence, male victims of partner violence, partner violence and help-seeking, family divorce and disruption, and the use of research in policy-making. She is the author of four books: "Child Maltreatment Fatalities in the United States: Four Decades of Policy, Program, and Professional Responses" (2016), "The Primordial Violence" (2013), "Innovations in Child and Family Police" (2010), and "Mending Broken Families" (2006). Sexual Assault and Workplace Harassment
    Mike Domitrz
    Founder
    The Date Safe Project
Sexual assault and workplace harassment is nothing new, so why all the attention now? Why does it seem survivors are just now stepping forward? Will all this attention to the topic become yesterday's news, or can real change take place? Domitrz has been speaking on this topic and training hundreds of thousands for several years across the globe. He can explain exactly how we can create a culture of consent and respect. Says Domitrz: "Sexual assault and workplace harassment are about power being exercise over another person and not necessarily about the power of the person committing the assault."
Domitrz is known for the impact his programs, trainings, and publications have made across the world for parents, teenagers, families, educational institutions, the U.S. military, and the media. You may have seen him as the featured expert on Dateline NBC's "My Kid Would Never Do That." Today, Domitrz is one of the leading experts for transforming our sexual culture to one being built on consent and respect -- discussing sexual decision-making, asking first, healthy relationships, bystander intervention, and supporting survivors of sexual assault. As the brother of a rape survivor, Domitrz's mission is personal. He speaks globally on sexual assault to more than 100,000 people each year, including at universities and the U.S. military. He is also the author of "Can I Kiss You?"
