Nigeria: cattle grazing to be banned

(MENAFN) Nigeria has executed a ban on cattle grazing which they claim will introduce peace to the region, yet rivals have labeled the act as a guideline for chaos. The ban which was implemented in the south-eastern Benue state came as a result for constant brutal and frequently fatal conflicts among nomadic Fulani herdsman and local farmers.

Conflicts usually originate when herders claim their cattle to be killed by farmers, as farmers accuse animals of wiping out their crops. However, the new regulations demand of everyone to maintain their livestock on ranches, in case the law was breached a possibility of five years of prison will be sentenced.

Based on a report from Abuja, the capital by the BBC's Chris Ewokor, the Fulani herdsmen claim that it unjustly aims at their nomadic lifestyle; however the Benue state government confirmed that its intention is to return peace.
