Delhi workers get more wages but less offs: Report
02 Nov 2017

India scored a major win in the World Bank's latest Ease of Doing Business report: it jumped 30 spots to 100th, the highest jump this time among all nations.

But there's more to the report. It also reveals working conditions in different Indian cities.

For example, did you know that workers in Delhi get more wages but less offs than those in Mumbai?

Wages in Delhi are roughly 60% more than in Mumbai
Findings

The World Bank surveyed 19-year-old supermarket cashiers across different cities of the world. In India, Delhi and Mumbai workers were surveyed.

In Delhi, the minimum monthly wage was roughly Rs. 14,000 (about $217), 60% higher than Mumbai's Rs. 8,650 ($134).

The difference balanced out in the number of leaves: Delhi workers get 15 paid offs a year while those in Mumbai get 21.

A comparison with cities around the world
Fact

Wages in Mumbai are less not just than Delhi, but also many cities in developing countries like Mexico City ($152), Kuwait ($199) and Vietnam ($168). Meanwhile, Delhi's wages might be more than Mumbai, but it's more expensive than Bangkok, Jakarta, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, even Manila.

Things are very different for employers though
Employers

However, things are different from the employers' point of view. The value addition was more favorable in Mumbai (wage is 60% of value added) than in Delhi (wage and value added are roughly equal).

Wage is a defining factor of where companies set up manufacturing facilities. Other criteria include working conditions, manpower quality, strength of unions and more.
