Hamas hands over Gaza border crossings to Palestinian Unity Government


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Gaza, Nov.1(Petra)-- The Palestinian Hamas movement, on Wednesday officially handed over the administrative control of Karem Abu Salim and Beit Hanoun crossings on the Israeli border, as well as the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian border to the Palestinian Unity Government.

The handover, came during a press conference held today morning at the Rafah crossing, which was attended by the Palestinian Minister of Public Works, Mufid al-Hassayna, Director-General of Borders and Crossings, Nazmi Muhana, a security Egyptian delegation as well as a number of officials.

Hassayna called the move "an important step toward reconciliation and an end to the division that went on for ten years", announcing at the same time that the Unity Government has decided to stop collecting all taxes and fees as the first measure to end the split.

Spokesman of the Borders and Crossings Hisham Odwan, said "From now on, the Palestinian Unity Government is the first and only body in charge of the crossing points in the Gaza Strip." In a statement , the PA minister of Civil Affairs Hussein al-Sheikh said that the National Unity Government is prepared to provide all requirements in order for the Rafah border crossing to function as normal by November 15 as specified by the 2005 Agreement on Movement and Access.
