Want to beat cold, stress in UAE? Try these 10 plants at home

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Are you under the weather? As summer transitions to winter in UAE, there has been a considerable spoke in the number of people reeling under influenza, cold and fatigue.

But, there is good news. NASA scientists suggest that presence of certain plants in the house or bedroom reduces stress and anxiety and helps beat colds, tight chests and insomnia.

Research from NASA and the American College revealed the top indoor plants and the three most beneficial ones are areca palm, aloe vera and English ivy, according to the reports in MailOnline.

The study says these indoor plants not only look pretty in the garden but can reap plenty of health benefits and remove airborne pollutants. Read on to know which plants you can pop up in your house to stay healthy.

1. Areca palm: Madagascan areca palm is the most efficient plant to mop up pollutants. The palm is ideal for anyone prone to colds and sinus problems because it releases moisture into the air, making it easier to breathe and sleep.

2. Aloe vera: Easy to keep. NASA names aloe vera as one of the best plants for air purification as it releases oxygen throughout the night and helps fight insomnia. It also fights benzene (which is found in detergents and plastics) and formaldehyde (in varnishes and floor finishes). Hence, it helps keep the air pure.

3. English ivy: More commonly associated with Christmas, researchers at the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology found that English ivy, in particular, removes 78 per cent of airborne mould in just 12 hours.

4. Dwarf date palm: The hardy, drought-tolerant and long-lived dwarf date plant removes indoor air pollutants - especially xylene, a chemical found in many cleaning agents and varnishes.

5. Boston fern: This attractive plant has graced indoor landscapes since Victorian times and ranks ninth in NASA's list of 50 air-purifying plants, being particularly adept at removing formaldehyde.

6. Chinese evergreen: Dubbed as the easiest houseplant, it grows well in low light and removes more and more toxins over time.

7. Peace lily: This plant cleanses air and improves it by 60 per cent, absorbs mould spores through its leaves and circulates them to its roots to use as food.

8. Spider plant: This houseplant grows very quickly and can remove up to 90 per cent of the toxins from the air in your bedroom in just two days. It's especially great for people with dust allergies.

9. Lady palm: This houseplant is one of the most effective plants at cleansing the air of formaldehyde, ammonia, xylene and toluene.

10. Weeping fig: This houseplant is the best at beating pollutants that are emitted from carpeting and furniture such as formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene.
