Qatar- Kahramaa reduces 8.5m tonnes of carbon emissions

In the last five years, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has reduced 8.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions and contributed to reducing electricity and power emissions from about 46 percent in 2013 to 39.6 percent in 2016.
The National Rationalisation and Energy Efficiency Program (Tarsheed) has also another strategic objective of cutting around 6 million tonnes of harmful carbon emissions by 2022, said Kahramaa President, Eng. Issa bin Hilal Al Kuwari.
He said that Kahramaa has reviewed its efforts in the field of achieving sustainability and since its launch in 2012 under the patronage of Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Al Kuwari was speaking at a session entitled 'Sustainability in Qatar: Challenges and Opportunities on the sidelines of Qatar Sustainability Week event, said a release. Al Kuwari said that Kahramaa seeks to spread the culture of rationalisation and create a model environment in preserving the vital resources and reducing the consumption levels of electricity and water in the coming years by reducing the per capita consumption of water and electricity to 25 percent for electricity and 35 percent of water until 2022.
Kahramaa is also running a programme about public awareness of environmentally friendly practices for rationalisation, energy efficiency and renewable energy, said Al Kuwari.
He underlined the Kahramaa Awareness Park and its role as a model building and a platform to educate future generations on the principle of rationalizing the consumption of electricity, water, energy efficiency and renewable energies.
On the sidelines of the event, Qatar Foundation Vice-Chairperson and CEO HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al-Thani visited Kahramaa pavilion and was delighted to experience the Tarsheed program in achieving energy sustainability, which was awarded the Qatar Green Building Council Award for the overall sustainability business.
Kahramaa participated with two working papers for Eng. Mohammed Al Sharshani and Maryam Al Mohammadi from the Conservation and Efficiency Department entitled 'Our Schools are Green and Sustainability our Future on the T22 project that was implemented by 44 independent schools during its first and second phases.
This year marks the third phase of 22 new schools as well as the 'green schools initiative, in which solar cells were installed on the roofs of schools that have won Tarsheed 22 Project.
The opening session of Qatar Sustainability Week marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding on 'Green Life initiative between Kahramaa, represented by Tarsheed, Qatar Green Building Council, Aspire Zone and Health First to promote healthy lifestyle.
