Kazakh Pres. stresses importance of resolving conflict in Syria


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Oct 31 (KUNA) -- Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Tuesday underlined the significance of finding a resolution to the conflict in Syria.

Nazarbayev made the statement during a meeting with representatives of the delegations participating in the seventh round of the Syrian talks, Kazakh news agency (KAZINFORM) reported.

He said the enormous numbers of victims and refugees in Syria were a great loss for the whole humanity.

The Kazakh leader referred to the importance of the current talks in Astana, reviewing accomplishments made by the negotiations on Syria, including the establishment of de-escalation zones and the formation of regulatory mechanisms.

For his part, Alexander Lavrentiev, head of the Russian delegation to the Syrian talks in Astana, said during the meeting that the de-escalation zones contributing to normalizing situation in Syria and creating atmospheres for gradual transition of the political settlement process.

He stressed the importance of abiding by the cease-fire, referring to the need of holding national dialogue to settle completely the conflict in Syria.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Jabri Ansari, the US representative David Satterfield and other representatives attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website that Foreign Minister Khairat Abdul Rahmanov held separate meetings with Syria's government and opposition delegations.

The delegations affirmed their resolve to continue action constructively within the framework of the Astana talks.

Today's talks focused on the release of prisoners, detainees and hostages, removing mines and the guarantee of humanitarian aid access to different areas, the statement said.

Also, Haider Tomatov, a senior official at the Kazakh Foreign Ministry, said the Syria dialogue conference will be held on November 18 in Russia's Sochi, while the eighth round of the Astana talks will kick off by the end of this year.

The conferees in the seventh round of the talks will not sign a separate document on releasing prisoners and detainees, he said, adding that this point would be mentioned in the final paper, which is currently drafted. (end) as.hm
