Qatar University (QU) held a lecture on ‘Qatar Blockade from Human Rights Perspective', during a recent visit of Dr. Ali bin Sumaikh Al Marri (pictured), Chairman of National Human Rights Committee (NHRC).
Dr Ali bin Sumaikh Al Marri gave an overview on NHRC which was founded in 2002 in response to the demand of the United Nations to create a structure of human rights related issues, which is neither a governmental entity nor a civil society institution.
He highlighted that NHRC is committed to protect and promote human rights and that the blockade imposed on Qatar is not just a mere diplomatic suspension but a collective and illegal sanction. Al Marri said: 'Qatari citizens were expelled from the blockading nations, and citizens of these nations who were living and working in Qatar likewise had to leave Qatar.
He noted that the blockade imposed on Qatar is a violation to the rights to education. 'Qatari students at different levels of education were forced to discontinue their studies because of the crisis and measures taken by the siege countries. In this context, Qatar University established a committee to assist the students who were affected by decisions of the countries imposing siege on Qatar, he said.
He also noted that the blockade imposed on Qatar is a violation to the rights of patients to health treatment and to the rights of Qatari citizens and residents to perform their religious duties such as Umrah and Haj.
In closing, Dr Ali Bin Samikh Al Marri highlighted that NHRC undertook many steps to shed light on the violation of the blockade imposed on Qatar to human rights. 'We have requested the exemption of families, patients and students from this political conflict, he said.
Dr Asma Al Attiyah, Head of department of Psychological Sciences at QU College of Education (CED) provided the results of a survey conducted by CED. On NHRC's role to solve the Qatar-Gulf crisis, 91% of the participants (Qatari citizens and residents) confirmed that NHRC plays a crucial role to solve the blockade imposed on Qatar, while 85% of the participants declared that they are aware of NHRC's efforts with regard to issues related to the Qatar's blockade.
