Qatar underlines protection of human rights as strategic choice


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The State of Qatar underlined that the protection and promotion of human rights is a strategic choice, based on its deep belief in the importance of building the society on sound foundations that safeguard human dignity and protect its fundamental freedoms. It noted that this is reflected in the provisions and principles of the Constitution and national legislation, which are consistent with international human rights instruments, as well as the establishment of institutions for the promotion of human rights, including the National Human Rights Committee and the Doha Center for Media Freedom.
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar before the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly on the item relating to the promotion and protection of human rights and protect, delivered by Third Secretary at Qatar's Permanent Delegation to the United Nations Al Anoud Qassem al-Tamimi. She underlined that the issue of human rights is the cornerstone of Qatar's policy in the fields of education, health, environment, the rights of children, women, the elderly, persons with disabilities and expatriate labour. This is confirmed by the fact that Qatar is ranked first in the Arab world and 33rd in the world on the Human Development Index of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
In line with the state's policy on the protection of human rights, Qatar has completed all national legislation to protect the rights of workers based on the international conventions and standards adopted by the International Labour Organisation, she said, noting that the International Trade Union Confederation welcomed the measures taken by the State of Qatar, and that what has been achieved is a decisive achievement for the benefit of the workers and the employers.
