Carles Puigdemont to run for elections if not thrown in jail

(MENAFN) Spain's foreign minister has declared that the dismissed Catalan leader possibly will run in new elections in December. However, he emphasized that the possibility will only be valid in case he was not in prison.

Once Madrid stripped Catalonia of autonomy for proclaiming independence, Carles Puigdemont was discharged from office. The control of Catalan institutions is now under Spain's central government.

The act of violating the Spanish law which was committed by Mr. Puigdemont has led Spain's chief prosecutor arranging to file criminal charges against him. The charges might take place on Monday, following the independence declaration and the Spanish countermeasures. Despite that, Mr. Puigdemont has stated that he doesn't recognize Madrid's order regarding his removal from authority.
