Kuwaiti official commends UAE's nuclear energy project


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ABU DHABI, Oct 29 (KUNA) -- A senior Kuwaiti official on Sunday commended the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, which contained state-of-the-art technology.

This came by Mahmoud Bu Shehri, Undersecretary of Ministry of Electricity and Water, during a visit to the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant as part of a team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Speaking to KUNA, Bu Shehri said Barakah was one of the key nuclear projects because it would provide safe and clean energy.

The project will be home to four nuclear reactors by 2020.

Bu Shehri said the team got acquainted with the construction of the four nuclear reactos, with progress reaching 84 percent.

He said the reactors would help eliminate 21 million tons of carbon emissions.

He noted the visit was on fringes of an international nuclear energy ministerial meeting which would start tomorrow Monday.

Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant's four nuclear reactors will supply up to 25 percent of the UAE's electricity needs.

Construction of the plant commenced in July 2012. (end) bsu.bs
