Washington, Safar 09, 1439, October 29, 2017, SPA -- A tropical storm formed Saturday afternoon over
Cuba bringing heavy rains to the centre and west of the country,
according to an advisory from the United States' National Hurricane Center.
Tropical Storm Philippe, which is currently situated around 30 kilometres south-west of Havana, is moving north at 46 kilometres per hour and is expected to reach the Florida Keys and South Florida overnight, the agency said in their 5 pm advisory (2100 GMT), according to dpa.
The current maximum sustained winds are 65 kilometres per hour while some "brief tornadoes" are reportedly possible across portions of South Florida and the Florida Keys. The region is still recovering from a devastating Atlantic hurricane season which started in August. Hurricane Harvey caused widespread flooding around Houston, Irma thrashed the entire Florida Peninsula and Maria caused catastrophic infrastructure damage in the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
