Brazil Amazon: federal property destroyed by armed men

(MENAFN) In the north Brazilian town of Humaita, additional troops and federal police have been set out following the incident of burning down a number of offices which were the property of environmental agencies by hundreds of gunmen.

In the middle of Brazil's Amazon region, the assault took place on Friday and proceeded for five hours. Based on authorities, the perpetrators were identified as gold prospectors and their motive was to pay back for their recent raid relating an illegal operation.

The damaged property belonged to two government agencies which were completely destroyed. However, Jose Leland Barroso, head of Ibama in the state of Amazonas, said "this is a barbaric attack, an act of terrorism, they are challenging the Brazilian state and they will get the proper response. Ibama will carry on with its activities. They may set fire to our offices, but we will carry on."
