The new guidelines for trading air-conditioners (AC) will help safeguard consumers' rights and encourage the dealers to import high-quality products, said the traders.

The guidelines were issued by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce a couple of weeks ago.

'The new rule provides customers one year complete warranty and a five-year separate warranty for the compressor, said Narmeen Hammouda, Country General Manager-Qatar at the United Technologies Buildings and Industrial Systems WLL, the company which manufactures Carrier ACs.

'The law for protecting the consumer rights is very much advanced in Qatar as compared to any other country, said Hammouda while talking to The Peninsula on on the sidelines of an event recently. She said that according to new guidelines, the customers will get warranty on buying new AC-compressors that was not available earlier.

'The move aims to protect the rights of customers by ensuring that the products they bought are durable and work properly, she added. The new guidelines will create business opportunities for high quality products.

'This is good for market players especially for those complying with high standards in dealing with ACs like manufacturers, importers and suppliers because it will broaden business space for such traders, Hammouda observed.

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce, under which the Consumer Protection Department (CPD) falls, is running a campaign on local media and social networking sites to educate consumers about new AC guidelines.

Regarding the warranty of AC compressor, the Ministry said that before the issuance of the new guidelines, the warranty period of compressor was not clear as the consumers were being charged for repairing services, spare parts and gas. But after this initiative, the consumers will get five year warranty on AC-compressor covering service charges and other necessary items like gas, said the Ministry in a recent post on a social networking site. Even after replacing the compressor the warranty will continue till six months from the date of replacement or end of the warranty period which one will last longer from both.

The Ministry has given three months grace period to traders to rectify their situation accordingly.
