Jordan- Nuclear safety centre to be launched

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Oct 28 (Petra) –– Measures are underway to set up a radiation protection and nuclear safety centre to control the use of nuclear and radioactive materials and combat their smuggling, Energy and Mineral Regulatory Commission (EMRC) Chief Commissioner, Farouq Hiyari, announced Saturday.

In a press statement, he stressed the importance of the centre, whose by-law was endorsed by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, in building a comprehensive nuclear safety and radiation protection system and handling any such smuggled materials.

Hiyari said the nuclear security centre will standardize references and achieve integration and coordination among the various authorities concerned with atomic and radioactive materials.

The new facility, he added, would form and oversee the training of a national task force to fight the smuggling of nuclear and radioactive materials and build national capacity and a data base of such substances.

The EMRC chief said the necessary safety recommendations regarding nuclear policies and measures will be put in place, including asking for foreign help, when needed, to deal with nuclear accidents or radiation crises, in addition to revisiting relevant legislations or proposing their amendments.
