Catalonia: police officials no longer possess power

(MENAFN) Hours after the direct rule on the region was imposed, a withdrawal of power was forced upon nearly all officials of Catalonia's senior police by the Spanish government. As the Catalan parliament voted to announce independence, this has been the initial specific measure taken.

The dissolution of the regional parliament and the removal of the Catalan leader were further declared by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, he also called for snap local elections. Thus, demonstrations for and against independence kept on going throughout the night.

In Madrid, as a rally "for the unity of Spain and the constitution" is to be held, further anticipations are on the way on Saturday. It is known that the issue started when Catalan leaders held an independence referendum in order to challenge a ruling by the Constitutional Court which had affirmed it illegal.

It was stated by the Catalan government that 90% supported the independence of 43% of potential voters who participated, however, after the court ruling, others have boycotted the vote.
