Don't let 'spaghetti' stain your tech plans

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) In tech parlance, 'spaghetti' would mean mixing things - processes, databases, etc - together in a manner that they become so complicated that they will be so hard to manage.

Now don't let that stain your systems, because that's going to be difficult to clean up. So make sure you know what you're doing, you identify your targets and have a strategy in place.

"We technology people should not ignore businesses' and people's real need and requirements," Dr Adnan Albar, vice-president of the Jeddah City Council, said at DigiTrans 2017 on Thursday.

"If you build a strategy and if you use even only 20 to 40 per cent of it, that's better without any strategy at all," he added during his keynote address discussing the journey of a nation's digital transformation. In this case, of course, it's Saudi Arabia, which is undergoing one of the most radical changes ever undergone by a country under its Vision 2030 plans. Naturally, tech is front and centre of this.

The kingdom aims to make use of technology to offer better, faster and safer services for citizens and businesses. It is also deep in planning investments needed in developing the nation's ICT infrastructure, while mapping the guidelines of digital transformation by heads of government bodies, municipalities and central authorities, while ensuring safety and scaleability.

In a decade, Saudi Arabia leapt up in the rankings of the United Nations e-Government Index - from 90th in 2004 to 36th in 2014. The aim, Dr Albar points out, is to be among the top five globally.

An effective e-government, he says, entails the wider use of online applications in government agencies, such as the cloud, data-sharing platforms and HR management systems.

It also means expanding the scope of current online services to include geographic information, healthcare and education. This would, in turn, improve quality by streamlining processes and diversifying communication channels.

The digital transformation drive in Saudi Arabia is surrounded by six trends: social media, the cloud, cyber-security, the Internet of Things, mobility, and artificial intelligence, big data and analytics.

And it's important to have effective platforms that will bring these on board.

"When you build systems, you should keep in mind that you want to come up with a platform," Dr Albar says.

A platform, according to his presentation, is a group of technologies that are used as a base upon which other applications, processes or technologies are developed. It will provide accessibility to all your services and make data open and accessible via API and Web services.

"At the end of the day, we are humans," Dr Albar quips. "We want to be served better."
