Spanish senate urges EU, int'l community to support Jordan

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Madrid, Oct. 26 (Petra) -- Spain's upper house of parliament (the Senate) on Thursday signed a memorandum demanding the Spanish government to provide financial and economic support to Jordan and press other European Union member countries to back the Kingdom which has been grappling with enormous pressures arising from the Syrian refugee crisis.

The memorandum, endorsed by the Spanish Senate's committee on foreign affairs, followed talks President of the Senate Faisal al-Fayez held with the presidents of the upper and lower chambers of the Spanish parliament and a number of senators and MPs.

It demanded Spain's representatives in the European Parliament to work with their fellow MPs to urge their respective countries' governments to stand by Jordan.

Al-Fayez told the Spanish lawmakers that Jordan is reeling under intense economic pressures as a result of hosting hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and the ramifications of regional upheaval. Al-Fayez, a former prime minister, said the international community didn't observe its commitments towards Jordan, which grew incapable of serving the refugees.

The talks dealt with ways of cementing Jordanian-Spanish ties in various domains. They also tackled a host of Middle East issues, particularly Syria and peacemaking efforts, as well as the war on terrorism.
