Brazil president safe from prosecution

(MENAFN) Politicians in Brazil have rejected charges of corruption against President Michel Temer.

The corruption charges, including bribes paid by meatpacker JBS SA, have halted Temer's reform plan for 6 months and damaged his government.

Opponents of Temer weren't able to reach the 342 votes needed to authorise the top court to put him on trial, because 172 lawmakers have voted to discard the charges

The voting means that the president is safe from trial while he is the president, but he is still under investigation and possible prosecution by lower courts after his term ends next year.
