France tells Israel to respect all rights of French detainee Hammouri

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Oct 25 (KUNA)-France on Wednesday demanded that Israel respect the rights of French national Salah Hammouri who has been in "administrative detention" in an Israeli jail since August 2017.

The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that authorities here were "concerned about the situation" of Hammouri, who has not been tried in a court of law.

France is providing consular protection for its national and is calling for respect of his legal rights.

Israel uses a system of administrative detention by military courts to indefinitely detain Palestinians who have no recourse to regular judicial procedures and who have not been convicted of and are often not even informed of any charge against them.

The Foreign Ministry here complained that the last appeal against detention by Hammouri took place at the Israeli Supreme Court on October 22 but neither Hammouri nor his lawyers were informed about the nature of the charges brought against him.

"France recalls that the abusive and systematic use of administrative detention infringes the right to a fair trial and the rights of the defence," the French statement said.

"We demand that all Salam Hammouri's rights be properly respected and we hope for his release. Meanwhile, we demand also that his family be allowed to visit him," Paris said. (end) jk.gta
