UAE- Housewives take lessons on fire safety

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The UAE Civil Defence has organised courses in fire prevention and safety for housewives in the UAE, authorities announced on Tuesday.

The General Command of the Civil Defence at the Ministry of Interior has created the crucial training course for housewives, in order to raise awareness about fire prevention, control and evacuation.

Major-General Jasem Mohammad Al Marzouqi, General Commander of the Civil Defence, said that the programme for housewives is the first of its kind in the country.

"This course is created to spread the culture of awareness on fire prevention and safety among members of the community."

He said the role of housewives are particularly important because they are the pillars of every family, and thus the level of their safety consciousness needs to be raised.

He stressed that housewives must not risk their lives during the event of a fire, but rather immediately contact the civil defence for rapid intervention.

"Raising awareness among the members of the community about the dangers of fire is the only way to help reduce the occurrence of accidents, loss of lives and property."

Major-General Al Marzouki stressed that home fire incidents are often related to lack of awareness and children tampering with hazardous and flammable objects, including matchsticks and lighters.

He pointed out that home fires represent the highest proportion of fire accidents in the UAE.

Housewives welcome the move

Mona Al M, an Emirati mother of four, told Khaleej Times that such initiatives will help decrease the number of fire incidents in the community.

"Being a busy mother of four can mean that my attention is not always with every child in the house and it can be dangerous, especially if the little ones get their hands on hazardous, fire-causing objects."

She advised mothers to start by making small, yet significant changes in the house, which will make the home safe.

"I always ensure that my youngest child does not enter the kitchen, and the oven's switch on the wall is turned off whenever it is not in use.

"It's also important to educate our children about how to properly use the fire extinguisher. That is something we taught our kids long ago," she added.
