Bihar education board under scanner for flunking student wrongly

Bihar's education board is under scrutiny once more for incompetence and malpractices.
It failed a Class 10 student this year in two subjects. The girl, Priyanka Singh, applied for revaluation, but was flunked again. After Patna high court's intervention, it was found that she had actually secured first division in both subjects.
The board will now pay Priyanka a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh.

Incident
The board had flunked Priyanka in Science and Sanskrit, awarding her 29 and 4 marks in the two subjects respectively.
A student of DD High School in Bihar's Saharsa district, she applied for revaluation but was flunked again. This time she was given 9 in Sanskrit and 7 in Science.
Confident about her performance in exams, she then moved the Patna high court.
Board officials tried to dupe the high court
Deceit
The board officials initially tried to unsuccessfully manipulate the high court by passing off someone else's answer sheets as Priyanka's.
Finally, they had to produce her original answer sheets and concede that Priyanka's actual score was 80 in Science and 61 in Sanskrit.
As a result, the Bihar school education board has now been directed to pay Priyanka a fine of Rs. 5 lakh.

Other instances
The Bihar board is one of the most controversial state education boards in the country. In 2015, friends and families of students had famously scaled the walls of examination centers to help them cheat in board exams.
In 2016, Class 12 toppers had impersonators writing exams for them. The board failed 65% of Class 12 students this year forcing them to stage widespread protests.
