Qatar- Traffic department shares safety tips

The Traffic Information and Awareness Department at General Directorate of Traffic yesterday organised a panel discussion under the title 'safety conditions of motorcycles and trailers during winter camping season.
The panel discussion came in the framework of the department's keenness to offer all traffic safety during the camping season. It also discussed the new procedures for registration of truck trailers, quad bikes and caravans and how that will help in increasing safety levels during camping season, and the role of police patrols in controlling violations.
The panel discussion was organised by The Traffic Information and Awareness Department at General Directorate of Traffic.
The seminar attended by officers from Licensing Affairs Department, General Directorate of Civil Defence, patrols department and speakers from environmental affairs department, Qatar General Authority for Specification and Standardisation and Hamad Trauma Center at Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC).
Captain Ali Salem Subaih from Licensing Affairs Department said that there are three types of motorcycles; the first one is above 50cc and will be registered and licensed and will be issued a number plate, the second one is quad bikes (desert motorcycle) above 50CC that will be registered but not be licensed. Then the third type of motorcycles which is 50cc or below and it will neither be registered nor licensed.
On the question that new procedures will decrease violations committed by motorcycles and trailers, Lieutenant Fahd Jassem Al Khater said that the new procedures is for the safety of bikers and road users in general.
For his part, Omar Al Awadi from General Authority for Specification and Standardisation said that the same specification which applies for vehicles should apply for trailers and caravans and there is no special difference between them and the most important factors are lights, length, width and height of the different vehicles.
Also Rafael Consunji, Director of the Hamad Injury Prevention Program with Hamad Medical Corporation said that the number of serious injuries among quad bikers during winter camping season were on increase and in last few years the percentage of using protective equipment was around zero.
He has advised parents to not allow children less than 12 years to use quad bikes (desert motorcycles), and should not be used in public roads because it is designated only for desert.
