Jordan's King says Palestinian reconciliation key step for peace process

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, Oct 22 (KUNA) -- King Abdullah II of Jordan on Sunday said the reconciliation agreement signed by the two Palestinian movements - Fatah and Hamas - is an important step in pushing forward peace process, re-launching effective and serious negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis.

The King made the remark during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman, said the Royal Court in a statement.

The two sides discussed developments on the Palestinian arena and the reconciliation agreement inked between the two movements in Cairo.

The King stressed the necessity of holding negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of the two-state solution that would lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, it noted.

King Abdullah affirmed his country's full support for the reconciliation agreement, which would contribute to strengthening the unity of Palestinians, according to the statement.

He reiterated that the Palestinian cause is the central cause and the core of the conflict in the region as well as a top priority for the Kingdom's foreign policy.

The talks underlined the importance of working with the US administration to resolve the conflict and make progress on the ground in the coming period, mainly in light of US President Donald Trump's commitment to working on achieving peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.

The two leaders also affirmed the need to respect the historical and legal status of Jerusalem.

In accordance with the Hashemite custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in the holy city, Jordan continues to play its historical role in protecting Jerusalem's holy shrines, King Abdullah stressed.

The meeting also reviewed the current regional developments and efforts aiming to find political solutions to crises in the region, the statement said.

Following the meeting, Abbas said, in a press statement, that his talks with the King dealt with the national reconciliation and the agreement signed in Cairo.

He pointed out that he appraised the King of the agreement's details, lauding his efforts to support the Palestinian cause. (end) ab.hm
