Afghanistan- DIAG handed 154 weapons confiscated in 6 months


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) (Pajhwok): Confiscated by police during the past six months, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Sunday submitted more than 154 different weapons to the Disarmament of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) program here.

Col. Sayed Afnadi Babazai, DIAG official at a ceremony in this regard said the weapons handed over to them included 45 pistols, 62 Kalashnikovs, 30 assault rifles and other guns.

He said the weapons had been recovered by officials of the under the MoI over the past six months

He said in addition nine jerry canes full of explosives and one and a half kilograms of hazardous explosive substance with eight capsules had also been confiscated by the officials concerned.

He said the counterterrorism directorate had recovered the weapons in Logar and Kapisa provinces and some areas of Kabul province.

Babazai further added that 20 anti-personnel mines and six hand grenades were discovered as well during operations.

He said the weapons were seized from irresponsible men and individuals who worked with security companies in the past and their gun licenses had expired. Babazai said dozens of people were also arrested in connection with smuggling of weapons.

Gen. Ghulam Farooq Parwani, central zone head at Ministry of Defence, also spoke on the occasion, and said collection of weapons would help ensure security in provinces.

The DIAG has been delivered 50,000 various kinds of weapons and millions of bullets since 2008.
