Turkey warns of handing over Syria's Raqqa to PYD

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- Turkey on Saturday warned the US against handing over Syria's Raqqa, whose Arabs make up 90 percent of the total population, to members of Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), which is an affiliate to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

In a press statement in northwest of Turkey, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Isik said the handing over of Raqqa to PYD will create more problems than ever, and fuel ethnic conflicts in the city.

He noted out that the region surrounding Turkey is going through a tough phase, as it witnesses largest unrest since the Sykes-Picot Agreement was inked a hundred years ago.

He said many countries have lost their control over their territories, including Syria which is suffering from intervention of many forces, including the US.

On Tuesday, the PYD announced its full control over Raqqa after members of the so-called "Islamic State" had surrendered. (end) rs.hm
