ABU DHABI, 21stOctober, 2017 (WAM) -- In an editorial on Saturday, The Gulf Today quoted the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as saying, "We must look forward and anticipate the future so that our country leads globally."

"True to that vision, the country has been relentlessly keeping pace with global developments and never tires of springing surprises with its amazing achievements in varied fields. The new Cabinet unveiled on Thursday has a task on hand: Making the UAE the world's best nation prepared for artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.

"Youngblood has been infused into the new cabinet, which means that energy and enthusiasm will be keywords," the Sharjah-based daily said.

The paper went on to say, "While the earlier Cabinet reshuffle saw the UAE getting a Minister of Happiness, a first in the world, the new government the 13th in the UAE's history has seen the appointment of Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, 27, as the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, AI.

"AI is a subject much talked about these days and has the potential to accelerate progress on global development goals. Incidentally, a United Nations event last week featured a robot as one of the panellists."

A moment that drew big applause during the UN event, "The future of everything sustainable development in the age of rapid technological change," came when Sophia, a humanoid robot, had a brief interaction with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed.

To Amina Mohammed's question about what the UN can do to help people in many parts of the world who have no access to the Internet or electricity, Sophia said, "The future is already here. It's just not very evenly distributed [ ]," quoting renowned science fiction writer William Gibson. "If we are smarter and focused on win-win type of results, AI could help proficiently distribute the world's existing resources like food and energy."

In March, the UAE Centennial Plan 2071 was launched to make the UAE the best country in the world, the English language daily continued.

It added, "The plan has multiple goals: to strengthen the country's reputation and soft power, ensure that government revenue is diversified, relying less on oil, introduce education programmes focused on advanced information technology and engineering, and consistently build Emirati values and ethics for future generations."

There can be no doubt that the new government will catapult the UAE into its prosperous centenary which aims to foster knowledge, science and research as well as engage the youth in the leadership of the nation, The Gulf Today concluded.
