(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Nearly 2,400 speeding violations were recorded in two days on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road, according to Dubai Police.
The violations have been reported after the speed limits were reduced on these roads with effect from Sunday (October 15). Of the 2,348 violations recorded, 924 were captured on Emirates Road, and 1,424 on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the General HQ of Dubai Police lowered the speed limit on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and the Emirates Road in Dubai from 120 k/h to 110 k/h. The decision, made last month, was taken as part of the efforts to curb traffic accidents and enhance the safety of road users.
The Dubai Traffic Police have installed 60 speed-control devices and radars to catch drivers who do not abide by the new speed limits.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of general department of traffic of the Dubai Police, said 8 traffic patrols were deployed to monitor Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and the Emirates Road after the implementation of the new speed limits.
He explained that on the first day, the Dubai Traffic Police recorded 338 speeding violations on Mohammed bin Zayed Road, while it registered 679 such breaches on Emirates Road.
He said that the decision to lower speed limit was taken after conducting studies and analyzing the cause of road fatalities during the past year. New signboards have been placed on the two roads which indicate the new speed limits, he pointed out, while urging drivers to adhere to it to make the roads safer.
Arab commits 5 violations Al Mazrouei said that many people contacted the department as they did not know about the new speed limit.
He said that an Arab committed five speeding violations as he was unaware of the new speed limit.
The man works in Abu Dhabi and was surprised when photographed five times by various radars, Al Mazrouei revealed. He was educated and should have read the signboard on roads while driving, he added.
Al Mazrouei added that it was expected that the speed limit violations would increase in the first few days until people become more aware of the amendment and careful about following it.
He said that awareness about the lowering of the speed limit had been spread through all media platforms as well as on social media, before it was implemented.
